I have also received the same kind of responses from aishwarya4sharma@hotmail.com id. This female never contacted me directly but was in contact via emails and send me an overcharged check and asked me to transfer funds to two people in Rhode Island via money gram and sent a fake check. Please be aware of such scams.

I just received this same email.
DeleteI got the same email from Sujitha Balay . These people are scammers. They send you the money, but more than what you expect. Then they are you to write a check to them for the difference. And by the time they receive the check, you would've realized the money they originally sent wasn't processed by the bank because the source cannot be identified. So they make money without spending a single dollar. This has happened to y husband and not they were trying to fool around with me. The minute I said a background check is needed, the person stopped responding. They need to go get a life!

ReplyDeleteI also had put and advert and got 2 responses. Both were fake and I never replied to them. Why would somebody email me when I have provided my number?. And the best part is that the mgmt at Sulekha have done nothing to prevent this. This has been going on for some years now and it is nothing new. Sulekha needs to find a way to prevent this.

I releazied that the money orders are fake when I took them to USPS store. Fortunately ecaped from getting dinged.

DeleteIts all fake. Even I got the copy of a passport but it was fake. They all either stolen passports or forged ones. The cheque will bounce and you will end up losing your money. Protect yourself ftom such people.

That person was presurizing me a lot to transfer the money. I blindly trusted and wired the amount. Informed the bank about it as of now they have not closed my account. Lets hope for the best.

ReplyDeleteIt was my first experience renting my apartment at so called Sulekha.com just to invite indian roommates and when i posted my ad i just got a warning message from sulekha asking me to be careful and beware of the most common scams happening quite frequently. At that point i didn't realise this. After a a day or two i just happened to receive an email from sulekha about kami.mitali@gmail.com with some us number with area code of that from Idaho interested to rent my apartment. I didn't respond. Because in the meanwhile i was trying to do some research on that email and phone number. Generally what i do is to verify the email address either in fb or linked in or other such popular portals where there is very high likelihood of discovering the correct person bcoz in my opinion anyone trying to rent must most likely be on fb or linkedin or something similar. You can also try a search on skype or few search sites like knowem, pipl, spokeo, etc. I used all variants of that email address to track down the sender but couldn't locate.Just then i received an email from that person exactly similar to the one being discussed throughout in this blog thread stating that she is a chemist and so and so...just address details changed and the intent was to secure the room as early as possoble via checks. I wasn't comvinced and simply requested for a genuine photo id. The sender replied back with a passport copy. At first glance the passport looked genuine to me but then i realised a girl wouldn't ever directly mail and send details like that and also would not emphasize so desperately to render the pay checks. This time i once again had a meticulous look at the passport copy and i could see that the passport number at the top right had 8 characters/digits but same thing at the bottom left had a digit missing.Also there was some thing scribbled way down as ........com .At once i realised that was fake and only intent was to lure me with such kind of emails.But i wasn't aware of the fact that what benefit would the scammer get like that by requesting my full name and physical mailing address details for sending check, since this was my first experience with posting ad on sulekha to share my apartment. It was then that i did a bit of research on the internet and came to know about these fraud checks and how they turn out to get away with your money.
So despite my lack of understanding about these scams my common sense and vigilance saved me from getting tricked . But that also wasted a lot of my time and will continue to do with many more innocent ppl . So i would urge we all submit our complaints on sulekha and let them take some action.Atleast something done from their end can prove better for us in the future as long as we continue to use sulekha for our needs owing to the fact there are not many such portals currently.

ReplyDeleteI read most of the comments above and just wants to share my two cents but vast experience...ALL THESE EMAILS ARE SCAMS. Before I talk about this scam, I also wants to inform other innocent people here about another fraud/scam going on via phone and email where caller will pose as IRS agent and will tell you and harass you that you owe money to IRS and a law suit is being filled against you unless you pay NOW (they mostly make you pay through western union, money gram, Apple itune etc. but remember real IRS will not ask any of these payments options).PLEASE DO NOT DO ANYTHING or CALL BACK...JUST HANGUP THE PHONE. IRS doesn't ask money via phone or put you in jail etc. ITS ANOTHER SCAM going on for couple of years and its increased up to 400% this year...just go checkout irs.gov to read more abut it (I will write more about this scam somewhere on this blog)
Now let me address Sulekha scam, I placed an ad yesterday and within few hours I got 7 emails asking me to reply but I did my search and they were all fake emails so I never replied. I agree that they are all scams and its hard to stop and educate all people on the net but I noticed one thing from "Sulekha Alert" that it informs you where the email is coming from and in my case they were all from Nigeria, South Africa and India...So just don't reply and ask them to show up at your address or ask them to give you phone and see if its valid number and talk to them. Don't even bother taking any money via internet either. Now giving out your address or name is not a big deal as long as you don't do anything else what the scammer tell you. I mean like the innocent victim up there (Shikha Madnani) did. Theses emails scams are another way of multiple variations of same kind of scam where the innocent victim will deposit money in his/her bank account for over payment check. The bank will give money right away assuming it will be cleared soon but after few days (usually 7 to 10 days) that check bounces back and it hits back to your bank and you are liable for that negative amount. During these days when the check is in clearing process, the victim follows scammers instructions and take out money and wire it to overseas scammers for the difference of over payment.
I hope I didn't confuse anyone with my explanations. Just STAY ALERT AND SPREAD THE WORD so minimize the victims. Thanks

ReplyDeleteEvery time person sends you more money than needed, if they tell you to wire transfer any money and if they do not give you direct personal check on their name, think of it as a scam. The check gets deposited, but after your deal gets completed, meaning you give them the money or furniture, the check gets bounced. In my case it took only 3 days for the check to get bounced, but some other friend's check that she deposited from the scammer got bounced after 6 weeks!

He gave me over payment for furniture + movers. Asked me to wire transfer the amount of movers which I did and the check got bounced after 3 days when I checked with my bank. I lost more than $1000 and my precious time when I was supposed to say bye to all my friends since I was moving. His gang is as follow.

Initially on my rental Ad at sulekha, this fake guy replied he was interested and shared me a drivers license copy under the name Rajesh Kanna and he urged me to share mine.He gave a check that bounced and went over draft.

I will be needing your help for much understanding. I can only make my first month Rent /Utilities payment through check because my sponsor is going to be responsible in handling my accommodation for the first month rental payment plus other expenses for my relocating. After the first month rental payment I will be handling all other payment in person or any means of payment you would prefer.

I just concluded with the travel agent and she informed me that money gram money transfer is the safest and fastest way to send the funds to this country and she would be receive it here in just 10mins. Kindly have the check deposited and as soon as funds is made available to you, kindly go to any money gram outlet close to you with $1945 and transfer the funds to my travel agent so that i can arrive the states. The transfer fee should be deducted from the $1945. I was also told that its important you have the funds sent at an outlet and NOT online cause money gram would normally put a hold on funds sent online until they confirm your Identity. Also, money gram accepts only cash at outlets

I have received check from vihaan khanna and I deposited on 11/18/2016 and check was clear and Vihaan keep on sending emails to remit his $1975 travel money to him through money gram. I was little heritage to do this and holding on this. But the check was revert back from my account on 11/24/216 and charged $12 return check fee. And sent an emails to vihaan about this and no respose from him. It's look like it is scam and thank god I have saved my self not sending $1975 to him. Be aware with this guys

This guy even gave pdf of scanned passport of Himanshu Joshi. I kept asking for social network profiles for confirmation, played hard ball with me saying I don't like them and if you are not interested then I will look at other places. I though I would give a try, then kept saying their sponsor will send check to my address and even sent a tracking number. At this point I wasn't giving attention, I finally checked the tracking number and It showed confiscated by Law enforcement. It seems, they might be doing this to many people and authorities already working on this. Anyways, be aware and never accept any mode of payment unless you see the individual in person verify their driving license and ask to transfer money online from the bank account or better ask them to get a cashier check.

Most of the UK numbers starting with 70 (such as 447024094481 above) are personal redirect number. Seems that some of UK carriers offer this free personal redirect number for people who travel out side of UK to receive redirected call on mobile phones in other countries. Some of these scammers are haevily using such free service to fake a UK number to redirect to their real mobile number.

These financial instruments help us in getting holding deposit in timely fashion before committing a rental to someone. I believe we should ensure to do due diligence to verify/validate as much as possible.
